Terrariums

Fish Tank Aquariums are often thought of solely as artificial water habitats, but they can be used to create terrariums, or simulated land habitats, as well. Many different creatures can be housed in these cozy glass and acrylic cages, including reptiles, amphibians, insects, and plants.

New World Habitat

What Is a Terrarium'
Terrariums have been around for about 200 years. Initially thought of as miniature greenhouses for preserving exotic plants imported from overseas, terrariums have since been used to create other microcosmic ecosystems such as deserts and savannahs.

Terrariums can house many types of animals singly, but are properly thought of as supporting a variety of compatible creatures. Terrariums are typically transparent and enclosed, and though the prefix terra, which is Latin for earth, suggests a land environment, terrariums can also be semi-aquatic.

Planning a Terrarium
Planning a terrarium begins with deciding which creatures you wish to own. Turtles, snakes, lizards, frogs, iguanas, and geckos are some of the most popular terrarium residents, but it's unlikely you'll be able to house many of them together, if at all. It's also not advisable to have more than a single male of any species housed together, or territorial combat will ensue.

Once you've decided on the species you want, find out whether they'll eat one another, and then learn what you can about the details of their natural environment. Rocks, twigs, and plants can be used to establish hiding, sleeping, and feeding areas in your terrarium that will make your animals feel at home.

Decorative Vs. Functional
All terrariums are decorative to some extent, but you can increase your terrarium's visual appeal with a few well-chosen accessories. A terrarium stand would provide a furnished vantage point from which to observe your creatures. Adding exotic plants to an existing terrarium is another option. Many terrarium owners ultimately decide to establish several terrariums that can be arranged alongside one another or even in tiers for an intriguing bestial panorama.

Maintenance
A well-maintained terrarium will require a good deal of equipment. Adequate ventilation will be necessary, as will light and heat. Keep all these needs in mind when selecting your terrarium inhabitants and buy equipment accordingly.

Besides equipment, your terrarium creatures will have basic needs such as food and water and a clean home. Waste can build up quickly, and regular soil changes may be necessary. A varied diet will also keep terrarium residents healthy and happy.
