Fish Tank Aquariums Quick Tips

Fish Tank Aquariums

1. Fish come in many shapes and sizes, and so do fish tank aquariums. But if you really want a fish tank with an unusual appearance, acrylic is superior to glass. Our acrylic aquariums include pentagons and hexagons for a greater variety of viewing angles.

2. Fish tanks made from acrylic feature different shapes because acrylic is easily and seamlessly moulded. Glass pieces have to be held together with silicone, which limits the construction of glass aquariums to basic shapes.

3. Acrylic is stronger, clearer, lighter, and easier to drill than glass (e.g. filtration system drilling), which is why many aquarists prefer it as a fish tank material. A large acrylic aquarium will weigh about half as much as a large glass aquarium - as you'll find out if you have to lift it by yourself.

4. Want to protect your fish from assassination? Bulletproof glass isn't actually glass. It's thick or reinforced acrylic. An acrylic fish tank aquarium is NOT bulletproof, but it is much stronger than glass and won't shatter or crack.

5. Fish grow. Seems obvious, right? Keep that in mind as you're considering fish tank sizes. Measure by the adult size of your fish, and follow a ratio of one gallon of water per inch with freshwater aquariums and three gallons of water per fish with saltwater aquariums.

6. A cylinder aquarium is the fish's equivalent of a beautiful pre-furnished apartment. Each five-gallon saltwater or freshwater aquarium has a themed design and comes with a filter system, lighting, and a decorative sculpture. Does not include cable TV and Internet.

7. The phrase "see through a glass darkly" holds water when it comes to your fish aquarium. Glass may seem clear, but it lets through only 70% of light. Acrylic allows 93% of light to pass through, thus providing a better and clearer view of your fish.

8. Fish tank aquariums should contain a one-inch to two-inch layer of substrate material. A one-inch substrate layer requires about as many pounds of substrate as the tank has gallons of water. So if you have a 55-gallon tank, you should buy up to 110 pounds of substrate.

9. If your acrylic fish tank aquarium sustains a deep scratch, you should be able to buff it out with an appropriate polish or acrylic repair kit. Make sure that whatever product you decide to use is safe for aquariums and fish.

10. Beginning aquarists often make the mistake of starting too small, especially with a saltwater aquarium. A mid-sized fish tank (55 gallons or so) will be easier to maintain than a small aquarium because the water chemistry and temperature will be more stable.
