Aquarium Decor
One of the ongoing pleasures that an aquarium or fish tank provides is the chance to experiment with decorative themes. Some people prefer the low maintenance simplicity of a few fish, some rocks, and a plastic plant or two, but for an imaginative aquarist, owning an aquarium can be like playing The Sims with Sea Monkeys.

Plants: Real vs. Fake If you're intent on establishing an authentic ecosystem, real aquarium plants are the best choice. They're beneficial for the aquarium's environment, absorbing toxins and providing a home for beneficial bacteria. The upside of silk or plastic plants is that the only attention they require is an occasional cleaning. |
Coral
Live coral is only used in complex saltwater aquariums known as reef tanks. These are very challenging environments to maintain and not recommended for the beginning aquarist.
Fake coral, however, is great for adding dashes of bright color to a freshwater aquarium. There are some very dazzling fake coral formations available, in sizes suitable for aquariums large or small.
Driftwood
Aquarium driftwood is a naturalistic touch that can enhance any decorative theme with its desolate and romantic ambience. You can go searching for aquarium-sized driftwood yourself if you happen to live near a suitable beach, or purchase ornamental driftwood from an aquarium supplier.
Rocks
Rocks are another fundamental decorative touch for any aquarium. A mineral-themed aquarium can be extremely interesting, so if you're prone to rock collecting you may consider combining that hobby with aquarium decorating.
If you find a rock you'd like to add to your aquarium, test it first by pouring several drops of vinegar on it. If after a few minutes the rock foams, it will dissolve in your aquarium and is unsuitable. To keep ammonia levels down, suitable rocks should be cured before adding them to your aquarium.
Decorations
Aquarium decorations can play a major role in establishing a visual theme. Many plastic and ceramic decorations are made specifically for aquariums. If you're considering using alternative decorations such as action figures or toys, make sure first that they won't be toxic for your fish.
An innovative way to decorate a glass aquarium is by pasting an enlarged photo or portion of a poster to the back glass. Having Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow staring out at your fish would definitely enhance a pirate-themed aquarium.
